Why We Err Killen 3/3/24

Matthew 22:  nkjv

23 The same day the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to Him and asked Him, 24 saying: “Teacher, Moses said that if a man dies, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife and raise up offspring for his brother. 25 Now there were with us seven brothers. The first died after he had married, and having no offspring, left his wife to his brother. 26 Likewise the second also, and the third, even to the seventh. 27 Last of all the woman died also. 28 Therefore, in the resurrection, whose wife of the seven will she be? For they all had her.” 29 Jesus answered and said to them, “You are mistaken, not knowing the Scriptures nor the power of God. 30 For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels of God in heaven. 31 But concerning the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was spoken to you by God, saying, 32 ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.” 33 And when the multitudes heard this, they were astonished at His teaching.

❓   When have you ever believed something that wasn’t true❓   ❓ As a result of your faith growing, when have you ever had to change, modify or finetune something you believed about God❓

💥  From these verses, we see that one of the major problems of the spiritual leaders of that day (according to Jesus)  was that those who were suppose to know and understand the Scripture, did not!

👉  (Scribes and Sadducees and Pharisees)

Scribes people who made copies of the Scripture and legal documents. They were masters of Hebrew law and could draft contracts for marriage, divorce, loans, inheritance, mortgages, and the sale of land. Scribes also served as teachers, lawyers, and scholars of the Bible for people to turn to with their questions and understanding.

Pharisees and Sadducees:  Priests dedicated to leading Israel spiritually.  All their life was given to study, teaching, and serving in the temple.  They were all taught above a doctorate level on the Torah and Hebrew laws and served as lawyers and judges in disputes.

⭐  PEOPLE THAT SHOULD UNDERSTAND THE SCRIPTURE AND KNOW GOD!

⭐   Vrs 29)  What did Jesus mean by, “You err not knowing the Scripture nor the power of God” ➢     The definition of the word used as “Power” of God.

  • Means = ( You do not understand His abilities.  How He Works.  What He does.

    • You do not understand His ways. ( Isaiah 55:8-9)   8  “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” says the Lord. 9  “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts.

💥    By not understanding the Scripture, they also didn’t understand or really know God. (limited narrow view of God)➢

As a result:

A.   They believed and taught things that were not true.v23 23 The same day the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection,

B.   They taught the understanding of man and not God. (They taught man’s ideas and not God’s) v28)  28 Therefore, in the resurrection, whose wife of the seven will she be?

C.   They brought division Paul used this division. v23) 23 The same day the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, D.   They twisted the Scripture.  Built their whole life and faith in God on what mankind wanted to believe and taught as fact. (They taught lies for truth.)

E.   A weak faith that misses out on God.  We don’t recognize Him when He is manifesting Himself in our life. v31-32) 31 But concerning the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was spoken to you by God, saying, 32 ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.”

F.   They missed out on the full meaning of God’s Word. v30)30 For in the resurrection they  neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels of God in heaven.

💥   It goes without saying and should be no surprise that we still do this thing today! ERR BY NOT KNOWING THE SCRIPTURE.      ➢   The incredible thing is we do it over the same scripture about heaven.

  • Will we know our family and loved ones in heaven? Will we still be married?  Some religions teach we will have our own houses and families in heaven.
  • We won’t know or remember anything about Earth. (Lazareth and the rich man)

    • How could we possibly be happy if some of our people were not in heaven?  (We make our own conclusions and hold them dear)

What does this teach?

1.     We need to know the Word to know God.

  • John 1:1  The Word is God.  v14)  That word became flesh and dwelt among us.
  • Know ourselves:  Hebrews 4:12   For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

2.     It’s the Word that guides us to know right from wrong.  Good from evil.

  • 2 Timothy 3:16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, (Right standing with God)

3.     We need Jesus to correctly interpret the Word. v23…..came to Him and asked Him,  All Scripture

  • John 14:6  6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

4.      God must reveal His Word to us.

⭐   We cannot interpret the word without God!   Proverbs 14:12 There is a way that seems right to a man but its end is the way of death.

  • John 8:31 31 Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. 32 And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
  • Matthew 16:17 And Jesus answered and said unto him, “Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but My Father who is in Heaven.
  • John 16:12-15  12 “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. 14 He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. 15 All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He will take of Mine and declare it to you.
