Anything Good? 1/14/24

John 1: 44-46   nkjv

44 Now Philip was from Bethsayda, the city of Andrew and Peter. 45 Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found Him of whom Moses in the law, and also the prophets, wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” 46 And Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?”Philip said to him, “Come and see.”

Romans 8:28  28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.

❓ When has God caused good to come out of from something you never could see any good coming from.❓ ❓ Does anyone (here) ever go through bad times?

  • No one likes to go through hard and dark times, yet everyone does.
  • Those times we don’t see how anything good can possibly come out of what we have to go through in life.

💥>  God is into making all things work together for the good! <💥

👉 ****)  Like a GPS   No matter where we are in life, no matter what difficulties we have to go through, God is always there to map out a plan to get you from you are (bad place) to where we need to be in life.

💥    The problem with Nazareth    The hint can be found in John 7:52⭐   God doesn’t use Nazerites:  John 7:52: 50 Nicodemus saith unto them, 51 Doth our law judge any man, before it hears him, and know what he does? 52 They answered and said unto him, Are you also from Galilee? Search, and look: for out of Galilee ariseth no prophet.

  • Somehow the Nazerrites were tainted.  (Human understanding)
  • If God would not use them.  Out of it comes the idea that they were somehow useless and worthless people to be looked down on.  Simply because of where they were from.

A     People from Nazareth were looked down upon.

  • Like people from the south  (Backward - uneducated - unenlightened)
  • Hick - hillbilly - Country boy/girl - local yokel - redneck

B      Nazareth was a small rural town where nothing much ever happened.  (Waterloo)

  • Not close to any other major cities.
  • Less than 500 people lived there in the time of Jesus.

C     A place few people had much interest in:

  •  Few ever went there / You didn’t just pass through it going anywhere.
  •  It was not a resort place
  • ⭐⭐  Last place you would expect anything interesting to happen.

💥  How?   Can Good Come out of the least expected?   Our part.

A.   Come and see.  Be willing to face your hard and difficult times.  46)46 And Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?”  Philip said to him, “Come and see.”

  • If Nathan was going to discover anything good that could come out of Nazareth, then he had to be willing to go and find out what he could learn!   He had to make his journey through the hard stuff.
  • 👉 ****)  We learn the most by going through the worst.  ***) Some things will never go away or be resolved until they teach us what we need to learn.

👉 ****)  Our part is not to be afraid to confront the bad or the darkness by trusting God to lead us through them.  It’s the first step toward the end of the tunnel.

B.   Look for the good! 45) 45 Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found Him of whom Moses in the law, and also the prophets, wrote—Jesus of Nazareth,

  • Some things stay ALL bad because we refuse to acknowledge and see the good that God has brought out of it.   Instead we get mad at God.
  • Be willing to find something good out of all the bad!!
  • This perhaps is the most difficult to do-- finding something good out of what is ugly and bad.

But this is what God does best!   Romans 8: 28: Romans 8:28  28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. >   If we just focus on the bad and never try to find the good, then we will stay stuck in our pain and problems.

C.   Learn to be thankful.  There is never a place or a time in our life that we can’t be thankful that God is God.

  • We don’t have to be thankful for the bad things that happen, but in all things God will give us a reason to smile again. <<<<<
  • 1 Thessalonians 5:18 18 in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.
  • God will meet us in the worst of the worst places and lead us out to where we can smile again in life.
  • Psalms 23: 3 He restores our souls!   Impossible?   Then we must do our part:  v16-17) 16 Rejoice always, 17 pray without ceasing,
  • 19)  This will unleash the Holy Spirit in our soul to work His power and miracles if needs be!  19 Do not quench the Spirit.

D.    Don’t be afraid to share with those that are trapped in darkness.   Share - Give hope - DON’T LIMIT GOD.

💥  What can come out of the wrong place? 💥

I.    ⭐ THE BEST THING THE WORLD HAS EVER KNOWN!  v45) 45 Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found Him of whom Moses in the law, and also the prophets, wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”   The best thing that has ever happened in the world came out of a place they thought no good could come.

  • Romans 8: 28   >>> He can cause all things to work together for the good.   >    Jesus will come out of the most unexpected difficulties we will ever face.

II.  ⭐ A deeper love of God! Romans 8:28)   For those that love God!

  • Many want to blame God or get mad at God. Isaiah 66:9   God will not allow us to go through pain without bringing something new to be born out of it.

    • “Shall I bring to the point of birth but not give delivery?” says the LORD. “Or shall I who gives delivery shut the womb?” says your God.
  • We often increase in our love for God the most when He allows the bottom to fall out from under us in life.  When we hit the rock bottom in life, we will discover that He is the ROCK AT THE BOTTOM.

III.  ⭐ A new purpose and direction in life. Romans 8:28 …...and are called according to His purpose.

  • It’s often our purposes and plans that get us into the most trouble.
  • It’s out of our worst trials that we set courses in life.  We find new and better direction to travel.

👉 ****) The green grass after the bonfire.

👉 ****)  Some things have to fall apart before things can start falling together.   (The story of all our lives to some degree)

Proverbs 3:5,6  Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not in your own understanding.  In all you do acknowledge him and he will direct your path.

⭐   The next time you don’t think anything good can come out of what you are going through, remember this:

⭐ JESUS OF NAZARETH! ⭐  The good that came from a place no one thought any good could come.
