1 Corinthians 14:5 nkjv5 I wish you all spoke with tongues, but even more that you prophesied; for he who prophesies is greater than he who speaks with tongues, unless indeed he interprets, that the church may receive edification. ❓When is the last time you spoke in tongues to God, prophesied to edify the church, prayed in the Spirit or sang in the Spirit to God?❓ These are all legitimate usages of the Holy Spirit.
💥💥 Nowhere does it say that these gifts fade away or that they were only for a select few people.
➡️⭐ According to this chapter, there are four types of using the spiritual gift of the unknown tongue. 1. Speaking in tongues. v2) 2 For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries.
2. Prophecy: Divine message that comes from God. ( Not necessarily predicting the future. It could incorporate this, but the main usage is to edify the church) Teach, train and cause the body of Christ to grow spiritually. v3) 3 But he who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men. ➡️⭐ v13) 13 Therefore let him who speaks in a tongue pray that he may interpret. 3. Praying in tongues: v14a) 14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful. 15 What is the conclusion then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will also pray with the understanding. 4. Singing in the Spirit: v14b) I will also pray with the understanding. I will sing with the spirit, and I will also sing with the understanding.
➡️⭐ After the resurrection, the coming of the Holy Spirit was as much of a mystery to them as it is for us today.
➣ Tongues is a real gift of the Holy Spirit that is to be used to cause people to grow spiritually.➣ Tongues are the gift (if used properly according to the Scripture) that can cause whole churches to grow spiritually.
➣ Shows us the things that God has prepared for those that love Him.
⭐ It is a powerful gift that God uses to help us grow spiritually and learn the things that: ➣ A. Our eyes could never see B. Our ears could never hear C. What we could never receive in our heart! v1 Corinthians 2:9) But as it is written: “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, Nor have entered into the heart of man The things which God has prepared for those who love Him.”
💥 We do not have to be afraid of the spiritual gifts. v5) I wish you spoke in tongues more than they all.💥But if not used rightly by letting God lead how we are to utilize this gift for spiritual growth, then Satan can get in there and use it against us.
1. It causes us to forget what tongues are for: v4-5) 4 He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church. 5 I wish you all spoke with tongues, but even more that you prophesied; for he who prophesies is greater than he who speaks with tongues, unless indeed he interprets, that the church may receive edification.2. It produces no spiritual growth: v6) But now, brethren, if I come to you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you unless I speak to you either by revelation, by knowledge, by prophesying, or by teaching?
3. It causes confusion. v8-9) 8 For if the trumpet makes an uncertain sound, who will prepare for battle? 9 So likewise you, unless you utter by the tongue words easy to understand, how will it be known what is spoken? For you will be speaking into the air.
4. We can become more zealous to have the gifts than we are to use them for their purpose. v12) 12 Even so you, since you are zealous for spiritual gifts, let it be for the edification of the church that you seek to excel.
5. Cause people to think the church is crazy!!! (What happens today) v 23) Therefore if the whole church comes together in one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those who are uninformed or unbelievers, will they not say that you are out of your mind?
6. Sign of spiritual immaturity: Paul labels the misuse of tongues as spiritual immaturity. v 20) Brethren, do not be children in understanding; however, in malice be babes, but in understanding be mature.
💥Biblical teaching: Tongues in Church:I. ➣ Paul doesn’t say it shouldn’t be used or that we don’t need it!!!!
II. ➣ It is better to prophecy! Preach for spiritual growth. v 39) v39 Therefore, brethren, desire earnestly to prophesy,
III. ➣ We are to be mature: v40) 40 Let all things be done decently and in order.
.Signs of spiritual immaturity: 1. Fear 2. Misusing the spiritual gift. 3. Not being in order 4. Not being subject to the authority of the elders. (Mature)
